What flower food actually does
Cut flowers are separated from the plant that fed them, so everything they need from that point on has to come from the vase water. Commercial flower food is formulated for that job. It is not simply sugar water.
The floral industry's guidance is blunt about the alternative: relying on plain water is one of the most persistent myths in flower handling. The Society of American Florists, reporting on lab-tested advice from the flower-care manufacturer FloraLife, lists "the belief that plain water is enough" among the myths that shorten vase life, alongside "the habit of eyeballing flower food measurements."
In other words, both halves matter: use the food, and measure it.
Measure it — do not eyeball it
The single most practical instruction is on the packet. Flower food is dosed by water volume, and the dosage differs between brands, so the ratio printed on your own packet is the one that applies to your product.

- Misting the petals. Hydration "happens through the stem, not the bloom." Wetting petals does not rehydrate a flower, and can invite damage.
- Warm re-cuts. The guidance is the opposite of the folk wisdom: "cool water with properly mixed flower food actually promotes better hydration and performance."
The same summary notes that sea-freighted flowers, often assumed to be inferior, "can perform just as well as air-shipped stems when handled correctly" — which is a reminder that handling, not transport mode, drives the result.
A routine you can repeat
Putting the published guidance together gives a simple cycle:
- Clean the vase and fill it with cool water.
- Measure the food to your packet's dosage for that volume — use the calculator rather than guessing.
- Re-cut the stems, remove any foliage that would sit below the waterline, and stand them in the solution.
- Refresh the water, re-cut and re-dose every couple of days, or sooner if the water clouds.
- Keep the vase out of direct sun and away from ripening fruit.
